After the death of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, his devious son takes power and demotes Maximus, one of Rome's most capable generals who Marcus preferred. Eventually, Maximus is forced to become a gladiator and battle to the death against other men for the amusement of paying audiences.

Maximus leads the Roman line against the Germanic tribes in this clearing. The forest was due for felling; Scott burned a section of it. Marcus Aurelius's camp is the same wood.

Maximus, hand brushing the grain, walks toward the wooden gate where his wife and son wait. This is the field, not the farmhouse a few kilometres west at San Quirico.

Maximus is sold in the provincial market and trains in Proximo's school. The ksar stood in for the North African town; Atlas Studios backlots are a different site.
